Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series Part 7

Bush League Monday is right around the corner. On May 4th, 2020 at 8:00PM EST (0000z, May 5th) the Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series continues with episode 7. This month, we return to British Columbia to explore an area that is becoming very familiar to the Bush Hooligans. Just East of Nemaiah Valley and North of Whistler is the South Chilcotin Provincial Park. DownwindSim and MelvinLeroy have created some airstrips that, combined with ones from LPNils, will create a very enjoyable event.

This month’s theme is adventure. As such, minimal information about airfields, location, and route will be provided. We want you to have the freedom to explore the area and satisfaction of discovering where these “angry little scratches” are hidden away. We have divided the airfields into West and East routes. This information is provided below, but you will not be assigned a route until the briefing.

Bush League Basics:

  1. Everyone is welcomed! Whether you’re an expert or beginner with flight simulators, radio communications, or navigation, etc., you’re invited! We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy learning from each other.
  2. All of the scenery and recommended aircraft is based on X-Plane 11.41.
  3. The best aircraft for these events are those that can handle short, narrow airstrips at high altitude. STOL mods are not mandatory, but helpful. Fat tires help make the bouncy strips that much more enjoyable. Several CSL files are available to correctly render other aircraft.
  4. We encourage you to join the VATSIM network and use the CTAF frequency of 122.8 to announce positions. We will not be in communication with ATC unless you plan to extend your flight into a controlled airspace.
  5. We’ll also use the Downwindsim Discord voice channel during the flight for non-ATC related chit-chat.
  6. As always, the main goal of these flights is to have fun. The event is intended to be VFR, so you are free to configure your weather and time of day as you see fit.

Flight Information:

All pilots should plan to meet at CYWL Williams Lake Regional Airport for flight briefing which begins at 7:30pm EDT (2330z). In addition to the usual information, each pilot will be assigned a route to fly for the event. Initial departures from Williams will begin around 8:00pm EDT (0000z).
The West Route includes Riske Creek, Big Creek, Stobart Creek, and Gun Lake.
The East Route includes Springhouse Airpark, Dog Creek, Gang Ranch, Echo Valley, and Gun Lake.

Williams Lake, Big Creek, Springhouse Airpark, Dog Creek and Stobart Creek are available from this link.

Each route is approximately the same distance and should take between 90 minutes to two hours to complete. As you may have already noted, both routes terminate at Gun Lake. Communicate and be patient as we all attempt to safely maneuver into this picturesque backcountry destination.

Sectionals for Canada are available with a free account at www.fltplan.com.

Ortho Scenery Notes:

If you plan to add Ortho4XP scenery to the mix, you will need tiles +51-123, +51-124, +52-123, +50-123. We’d recommend these settings for these tiles in Canada for Ortho4XP. Using Ortho4XP is NOT necessary, but does add to the realism.

As questions on the DownwinSim Discord bush-flying channel if you need any help. We will see you on Monday and MAY YOUR SECTIONAL BE WITH YOU!
