Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series Part 3

It’s that time again… join us on Monday, January 6, 2020 at 8:00PM EST (0100z, January 7) for part 3 of the Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series! A big thanks to Kawfee Bassie for planning the route and pulling the details together for this virtual flight. This month’s group flight finds us in the Pacific Northwest, enjoying the area around Mt. Baker and Mt. Rainier. Here’s the details…

  1. Everyone is welcomed! Whether you’re an expert or beginner with flying simulators, radio communications, or navigation, etc., you’re invited! We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy learning from each other.
  2. All of the scenery and recommended aircraft is based on X-Plane 11.41.
  3. The starting airport will be Lynden Municipal Airport (38W). We’ll then head east and then south, finally ending up at Ranger Creek (21W) located at the northeast base of Mt. Rainier.
  4. You can fly whatever aircraft you’d like, but be prepared to land on some grass strips. Most airfields/airstrips can’t accommodate anything much bigger than a Cessna 172.
  5. Most of the pilots enjoy navigating via pilotage, i.e. “looking out the window” and comparing it to the sectional chart (link to the Seattle sectional is below).
  6. We encourage you to join the VATSIM network and use the CTAF frequency of 122.8 to announce positions. Several CSL files are available to correctly render other aircraft.
  7. We’ll also use the Downwindsim Discord voice channel during the flight for non-ATCrelated chit-chat.

Flight Plan and Scenery Links:
Lynden Muni (38W) ->
Kendall Airstrip (WN08) ->continue east along the North Fork Nooksack River, over the Mt. Baker ski resort, then south over Baker Lake to ->
Mears Field (3W5) ->
Williams Airpatch (89WA) ->
Sky Harbor (S86) ->
Skykomish State (S88) ->
Easton State (KESW) ->
Ranger Creek (21W)

UPDATE: There’s now a link for custom scenery at Kendall Airstrip (WN08)… standard x-plane install procedure. Melvin Leroy and I have also created add-on scenery to replace the default Williams Airpatch (89WA). The scenery at Williams Airpatch has some fun sandbar opportunities if you’d like to re-cook the +48-123 Ortho tile with this updated OSM data. The sandbars are short… so stay out of the water! A big thanks to Melvin Leroy for his help on Williams Airpatch.

Please refer to the Seattle sectional chart for route planning.

Scenery Notes:
Most of the linked scenery files have library requirements. Refer to the details/descriptions of the files at x-plane.org for details. If you’re using X-Plane (v11.41 is the current at the time of this writing), we’d recommend, if your system can handle it, using Ortho4XP scenery. On this flight we’ll be flying in tiles +48-123, +48-122, +47-123, +47-122, +46-123, +46-122. We’d recommend these settings for these tiles in the USA for Ortho4XP. Using Ortho4XP is NOT necessary, but does add to the realism. IMPORTANT: If you are generating Ortho tiles in this region, please note that for tiles +46-121 thru 124, +47-121 thru 124, and +48-121 thru 124 (12 tiles total) the overlay data is found in the X-Plane 11/Global Scenery/X-Plane Demo Areas folder. You’ll need to change the “custom_overlay_src” option to reflect that folder. Contact me on Discord if you get stuck.
