Bush League Backcountry Fly-in Series 20

This month’s Bush League theme is cargo hauling in the great state of Alaska. At its heart, the mission is simple: deliver supplies from Talkeetna to the remote communities of Kantishna, Minchumina, and Stampede. Those of you familiar with past Alaskan adventures knows that nothing comes easy in the land of the midnight sun. Terrain, weather, limited navigational aids, and challenging bush strips are some of the hazards you will have to contend with in your travels.

The event organizers are hoping you will consider adding an additional element of difficulty in this month’s fly-in by choosing an unpressurized cargo airplane with /A navigational equipment. All airstrips are within the limits of planes all the way up to the DC-3. It goes without saying, the larger the aircraft, the more of a challenge this flight will be, but imagine the stories you can tell when you’re back at the Talkeetna pilot’s lounge.

Bush League Basics:

  1. Everyone is welcome! Whether you’re an expert or beginner with flight simulators, radio communications, or navigation, etc., you’re invited! We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy learning from each other.
  2. We are encouraging you to break out your favorite non-pressurized, bush-style, cargo aircraft for this event. While we do love the Dakota, there are many others with excellent track records hauling items of all sorts through the Alaskan back-country.
  3. We encourage you to join the VATSIM network and use the CTAF frequency of 122.8 to announce positions. We will not be in communication with ATC unless you plan to extend your flight into a controlled airspace.
  4. We’ll also use the Downwindsim Discord voice channel during the flight for non-ATC related chit-chat.
  5. As always, the main goal of these flights is to have fun and practice good airmanship. The event is intended to be flown in real time with real weather, giving you a chance to fully experience the majesty of Denali National Park.

Flight Plan and Scenery Links:

  • The event takes place on Monday, June 7th.
  • Flight briefing begins at 8:00pm EDT in the DownwindSim Discord voice channel.
  • The route starts and concludes at Talkeetna (PATK).
  • Pilots may visit the other three airstrips, Kantishna (5Z5), Minchumina (PAMH), and Stampede (Z90), in any order.
  • The spirit of the event is to find the most efficient way through or around the Alaska Range. The sectional shows the location of several passes that will allow an unpressurized aircraft to travel safely through the mountains…depending on the weather.
  • Click here for the X-Plane Scenery download. Please refer to the installation instructions in the ReadMe file.

We look forward to “trying not to get lost” together!
