Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series Part 2

Monday December 2, 2019 is the second of the Bush League Backcountry Fly-In Series! Again… here’s a few details to get things started…

  1. Everyone is welcomed! Whether you’re an expert or beginner with flying simulators, radio communications, or navigation, etc., you’re invited! We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy learning from each other.
  2. All of the scenery and recommended aircraft is based on X-Plane 11.40.
  3. We’ll plan on starting at the Puntzi Mountain Airport (CYPU) in beautiful British Columbia, Canada. We’ll then make our way to the south stopping at six local airstrips in the region while circling back to Puntzi Mountain just before sunset. There are only three places to spawn at Puntzi Mountain Airport. As you arrive at Puntzi Mountain, we ask that you taxi to a parking spot in the grass so everyone is not on top of one another.
  4. Fly whatever you want, but most airfields will accommodate a Cessna 172 sized aircraft. Several of us plan to fly the PropStrike C172 Mod for the default C172 from Laminar Research (think low and slow).
  5. Navigation will be done via pilotage, i.e. “looking out the window” and comparing it to the sectional chart (link below). For those that want to use a GPS… good luck! This will be a VFR flight. We plan to use real weather, but if the cloud deck is low, adjust your cloud deck to 1500-2000 AGL.
  6. We encourage you to join the VATSIM network and use the CTAF frequency of 122.8 to announce positions. Several CSL files are available to correctly render other aircraft.
  7. We’ll also use the Downwindsim Discord voice channel during the flight for non-aviation related chit-chat.

Flight Plan:
Puntzi Mountain (CYPU) — Set your sim time to 14:00 for a sunset arrival back at CYPU ->
Tatlayoko Lake ->
Bracewell Wilderness Lodge ->
Tsuniah Lake Lodge->
Chilko Lake Lodge ->
Childo Lake Wilderness Ranch ->
Choelquoit Lake Airstrip ->
Puntzi Mountain (CYPU)

Scenery Notes:
If you’re using X-Plane (v11.40 is the current at the time of this writing), we’d recommend, if your system can handle it, using Ortho4XP scenery. On this flight we’ll be flying in tiles +51-124, +51-125, +52-124, +52-125. We’d recommend these settings for these tiles in Canada for Ortho4XP. Also, we’d recommend using these slightly modified openstreetmap data files for tile +51-125. If you’re not sure how to use the modified OSM data, here’s a short video. Using Ortho4XP is NOT necessary, but does add to the realism.

Both of the above-linked sceneries have library requirements. Refer to each scenery package download page for details. If you get stuck or have a question, drop a message on the DownwindSim Discord bush-flying text channel. We’ll be happy to help!

  1. Hi
    I have downloaded a few packages from the series “Bush League…”. Again and again I come across messages in the Logt.txt when loading a scenery, that one and another file is not available.
    Here below is just one example:

    How can I fix such messages? I am looking forward to your answer. Many thanks in advance.

    Best Regards
    Marcel

  2. Hi
    Sorry, my mistake, . There is nothing wrong with this scenery package and probably with the others. I mistakenly installed the latest version 2.3 of Nemaiah Valley Lodge stripes. I only read later in the description from XP-forum that version 2.3 could have error messages in XP 11. And that was exactly the reason for the error messages. Have a nice Sunday.

    Best Regards
    Marcel
