When summer temperatures are in full effect, the best course of action is to head to the mountains. While there are many incredible locations where a pilot can find some cooler weather, this month’s fly-in takes us to Wyoming’s Wind River range. It has been a while since we’ve been in Cowboy country, so get your flying boots on, and let’s spend some time in the high country.
We will plan to meet for the 6pm MDT event briefing at 46U Alpine Airport with departures to follow immediately. This is the new hometown of YouTube aviator, Matt Guthmiller. No word on if he will provide refreshments.

Our first stop will be WY30 Kinky Creek Divide Airport. This place has everything: high elevation, unpredictable weather, and bears. At 8800ft, it will test you, but with almost 3500ft of runway, just about any GA aircraft will be able to get in (and out) without too much difficulty.

If you are in a little faster bird and would like to extend the route, set your next course to KDUB Dubois Municipal. Remember, the locals pronounce it DU-boys. If you stop to get a fresh diet Dr. Pepper, try not to embarrass me when you talk to the guy at the FBO.

Next up will be KJAC Jackson Hole Airport. Make sure your bush tires are clean because this is the airport of the super wealthy. They love it when you park tail draggers close to the Phenoms, by the way.

From there, we set our heading back to Alpine to wrap up the evening. Since it’s a fly in community, they should love a bunch of hooligans swarming their local strip. I’ll have a campfire going in Matt’s backyard.
Bush League Basics:
- Everyone is welcome! Whether you’re an expert or beginner with flight simulators, radio communications, or navigation, etc., you’re invited! We’re a friendly bunch and enjoy learning from each other.
- An old beat-up, private carrier bush plane is recommended. That’s adds to the fun and challenge.
- We encourage you to join the VATSIM network and use the CTAF frequency of 122.8 to announce positions. We will not be in communication with ATC with the exception of KJAC, which is a class D airfield.
- We’ll also use the Downwindsim Discord voice channel during the flight for non-ATC related chit-chat.
- As always, the main goal of these flights is to have fun and practice good airmanship. Feel free to adjust the time and weather in order to best enjoy the event. Make sure you note any Wx changes in your flight plan.
Ortho4XP Scenery Installation Instructions:
All the airstrips are developed, tested and designed to work with Ortho4XP scenery tiles. You’ll need to cook at least tiles +43-112, +43-111, +43-110. These are the settings I used to cook my Ortho4XP tile… I’d recommend the same! Also, I used “Bing” for the imagery source as this provided a bit more consistency throughout Wyoming.
